Script that installs all necessary tools 8 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi,
Not sure if this is welcomed or appropriate here, but figured I'd pass this along. After a lot of trial and error and repeating my steps, I decided to assemble a script that downloads all the necessary binaries/libraries/etc (gd, ffmpeg, mencoder, libx264, etc) required by jvideodirect, configures, builds and installs them locally. I have tested this on a couple systems and it appears to successfully install the proper environment that jvideodirect needs to encode and thumbnail both sd and hd clips. (Just go into jvideodirect->configuration and enter the location of the newly installed binaries (e.g. /home/sinjinn/usr/bin/ffmpeg).

This script is intended to set up everything on a shared environment host (everything can be installed in $HOME/usr) as that is what I was originally running on (Dreamhost), however, It should be able to be used in a dedicated environment as well (I'm using it on a Dremhost VPS right now).

Note:
The only step you need to do manually (on a shared environment) is adjust the PATH'S and LD_LIBRARY_PATH's environment variables so the newly built binaries and libraries are seen before any global ones. This is the very last step. I think this may be different for each system, so I left this up to the user.

Hope others may find it useful. The script is described a bit in part of my blog, so just navigate here: *******, read a bit about the script, and look for the 'Download Here' at the top of the posting.

Good luck!

Server junk is way over my head but I wish I knew more, some questions that might help other server/host no.Obs like me ...

Is this for servers we run or for instance the site I have on godaddy or other host?

Now to ask the question that directly matters to me but first some background ...

I'm running Xampp on a windows xp box with my site hosted locally will any of this work for me?

Hi, Good question. In short, I don't think this is what you need.

This is meant to be run on the site where the actual web hosting is done. For instance, in my case, I would ssh (login via terminal prompt) to Dreamhost (in your case, GoDaddy), and run the script on there. This script would not be what you are looking for to run locally on your windows box. My apologies for the confusion and not being more clear. This is intended to run on a unix-flavored operating system accessed via shell account. In additional to other uses, this script is primarily my attempt at a quick and easy way (reproducible as well) to replace all the manual steps of Server Preparation and should also work on a shared hosting environment.

Hope that helped.
